What each value means
What is peak particle velocity (PPV)?
PPV is the maximum speed at which a point in the ground moves as a vibration wave passes, measured in millimetres per second (mm/s). It is the most common metric used to assess the risk of blast-induced damage to nearby structures, and the one regulators rely on for compliance. PPV tells you the peak, but the full story lives in the waveform, which is where acceleration data and wide frequency response come in.
What is maximum instantaneous charge (MIC)?
MIC is the largest mass of explosive detonating within any single delay period, measured in kilograms. Because delays separate a blast into discrete detonations, the MIC — not the total charge — drives the peak vibration at a given distance.
What is scaled distance?
Scaled distance is the distance to the monitoring point divided by the square root of the MIC (D / √MIC). It normalises geometry and charge into a single number, which is why blast engineers use it to compare shots and predict PPV.
Which ViB unit do I need?
It depends on the peak acceleration you expect. Enter a scenario above and the calculator suggests a range: the ViB Nano suits lower-level ground vibration (2–8 g), the ViB Pro X covers most blast monitoring (2–40 g), and the ViB Max handles ultra-high-g near-field or product-test work (up to 1000 g).
How accurate is this calculator?
It uses the Australian Standards scaled-distance law (K = 1140, B = -1.6) as a planning guide to help select equipment. Real attenuation depends on geology, confinement, and site conditions, so it should not be used for blast-design PPV predictions or compliance sign-off.
